Biological Threats

Excerpts from COD Emergency Response Plan

College Staff Response

Remain calm. DO NOT PANIC.

For any suspicious package or envelope, do not handle, shake or empty it.

If the substance is lying out in the open, cover it with anything (e.g. clothing, paper, trashcan, etc) and do not remove the cover.

Then LEAVE the room with all occupants and CLOSE the door, or section off the area to prevent others from entering.

Call the College Public Safety Police Department at ext. 2000, unless you are off campus at a satellite facility, then dial “911” to call the local police.

WASH your hands with soap and water to prevent spreading any substance to your face or other parts of your body.

Remove heavily contaminated clothing as soon as possible and place them in a plastic bag, or some other container that can be sealed.

Anyone who may have had contact with a substance should shower with soap and water as soon as possible. DO NOT USE BLEACH or other disinfectant on your skin.

If possible, make a list of all the people who were in the room or area, especially those who had actual contact with the suspect material. Anyone who may have had contact should be isolated in a specific area to wait for arrival of assistance.
