Purpose

Excerpts from COD Emergency Response Plan

College of DuPage, in cooperation with Glen Ellyn and Wheaton’s police and fire departments developed this guide. There should also be a “Faculty and Staff Emergency Response Handbook” in every classroom or office on campus. Staff should be familiar with its content and location prior to an emergency situation developing. If you cannot find one, notify the Public Safety Police at ext. 2000 and one will be provided for the room. You can view a streaming video on Emergency Response.

The purpose of this plan is to present different strategies to maximize the safety of all members of the college community. In order for any set of policies to work, they must be established and implemented with the participation and support of the school board, administrators, faculty, staff, and students. Without such shared responsibility, the chance of such policies being successfully implemented and accepted is undermined.

Everyone working to prevent or respond to a college crisis should be aware that no strategies in this or any other publication provide any guarantees against violence. Recognition of the rarity of significant school violence and the complexity and unpredictability of human behavior should temper initiatives as well as expectations.

Public Safety responses are provided as examples of common practices and may vary depending on unusual circumstances, or the training, knowledge and experience of the responding personnel.
